Two well established hospitals in the Chicago, Illinois area have agreed to settle out of court in a lawsuit claiming the organizations overcharged nearly half a million uninsured patients. The lawsuit also alleges that the hospitals failed to provide financial help. The settlement involves both hospitals agreeing to examine their accounting records and offer refunds to patients who are entitled to discounted or free care. One of the organizations has eight Catholic hospitals in Chicago and has also been involved in a union-organizing dispute for at least five years.
